History of Jordan
Jordan is one of the oldest inhabited countries in the Middle East and dates back to 8000 BC. It was once part of the ancient Median and Babylonian kingdoms, and later became a province of the Ottoman Empire. In 1916, following World War I, Jordan became a British protectorate, but it gained its independence in 1946. The country has been ruled by the Hashemite dynasty since 1949. The monarchy was overthrown in 1952 and Jordan became a republic with King Hussein as its first president. During the Gulf War (1990-1991), Jordanian forces fought alongside the United States against Iraq. Today, Jordan is an important regional partner in Arab League; it has also signed peace treaties with Israel and Egypt.
The Best Fun Things to Do in Jordan
The best fun things to do in Jordan can be split into two categories: things to do inside the country and things to do outside of it.
Inside the country, some great options include attending a traditional Arabic music concert or going for a night drive around the stunning desert landscape.
Outside of the country, there are plenty of activities that can be enjoyed depending on your interests. If you love adventure sports, then you’ll want to head out onto one of Jordan’s plentiful hiking trails or go cycling through some beautiful mountain villages.
Alternatively, if you’re interested in enjoying a more relaxing experience, then checking out one of Jordan’s famous waterfalls or beachside resorts will be perfect. No matter what your taste might be, there’s something for everyone in Jordan!
Activities That are Safe and Fun
If you’re looking for some great, safe and fun activities to do while in Jordan, here are a few suggestions:
1. Visit the Dead Sea – This is definitely one of the highlights of any visit to Jordan! Whether swimming, lounging or sunbathing at the amazing beach nearby, there’s plenty to do here.
2. Take a stop at Wadi Rum – Another must-see on any trip to Jordan is Wadi Rum. Just 30 minutes northwest of Amman, this amazing basalt desert offers endless opportunities for exploration and adventure – from hikes and camel rides to dirt biking and cliff diving.
3. Go bird watching – Jordan is home to an incredible variety of birds, many of which can only be seen in the country. Head out to one of Jordan’s many nature reserves where you’ll have plenty of chances to spot them in their natural habitat.
4. Sample Jordanian cuisine – Nothing says vacation like trying something new and delicious! From hearty breakfasts including falafel balls and hummus soup, to intriguing lunchtime sandwiches with different types of cheese and pickles, dining out in Jordan is a must-try experience. And if trying local food doesn’t sound appealing, there are always plenty of chain restaurants available throughout the country as well.
5. Enjoy a leisurely stroll through ancient markets – Some say that old Damascus markets are second to none when it comes to atmosphere and history – not to mention all of the excellent cuisine to be found there! Alternatively, head over to Ajlun or Madaba for their arts and crafts markets, both of which are rife with beautiful baubles and artisanal charms.
Conclusion
Jordan is a great place to travel if you want to explore different cultures and have some fun along the way. These are the best things I tried while in Jordan, and hopefully, they will inspire you to visit this beautiful country for yourself!
